Sentence stems

Sentence completion is a technique I have developed in my clinical practice that can be used to facilitate self-understanding and personal growth. The essence of the sentence completion procedure is to start with an incomplete sentence, a “sentence stem,” and to keep adding different endings, between six and ten, with the sole requirement being that each ending be a grammatical completion of the sentence. When you use partner talk in your classroom, you are allowing students to apply their learning. Partner talk occurs anytime you do “turn-and-talk”, “find someone who…”, or “think-pair-share” or any other method that is intentional talk with two or three learners talking about their learning. I recall a number of years ago first reading Dan Willingham’s ‘Why Is It So Hard to Teach Critical Thinking’ and being really struck by the thought that a student might know the cue that is expected, but still not how to enact it. They might know, for instance, they are expected to use the above sentence stems, they might remember them and know the words, but that is not a guarantee they can successfully implement them. You’ll do this with a few sentences setting up the stage for your topic and the claim you will make about it.
