Career opportunities exist in engineering design and development such as hardware/software co-design and integration, embedded system programming, mobile system and application development, robot and drone design, and cloud and big data computing. Other opportunities include engineering management, consultancy, technical sales, and patent law. The program provides a strong preparation for graduate study. Electrical Engineering Tracks1 Computer engineering students, on the other hand, are somewhere between computer science and electrical engineering. Therefore, you’ll probably find system operations and computer architecture courses in a computer engineering degree as well. However, computer engineering programs focus on the development, prototyping, and design of both software and hardware, as well as the integration of the two. As a result, they put a big emphasis on the physics and manufacturing of physical devices and integrated circuits. Computer engineering students learn to master robotics, pattern recognition, speech processing, and so much more.

Note that there are no absolutes when it comes to master’s programs because degree naming conventions vary considerably from university to university. Some schools offer a Master of Science in both computer science and computer engineering. Others offer a Master of Engineering in computer science. There may be substantial overlap in the curricula of these and other programs because schools are free to name their degrees as they see fit and design curricula and requirements the same way. You should always review the coursework of each program you’re considering to see whether it aligns with your interests and goals instead of relying on degree names alone. Computer engineering careers Computer engineers may need to pursue different concentrations or additional education to prepare for some specialized jobs. For example, a computer engineering program alone might not cover the advanced theories of aerodynamics necessary for computer engineering jobs in aerospace.
